Lata Iskandar (Waterfall at Cameron Highlands)
Batu Caves, is a limestone hill, which has a series of caves and cave temples, located in Gombak district, 13 kilometers (8 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It takes its name from the Sungai Batu or Batu River, which flows past the hill. Batu Caves is also the name of the nearby village.
The Batu Caves is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is the focal point of Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia.
Interior of Batu Caves
The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years old. Some of the cave entrances were used as shelters by the indigenous Temuan / Besisi people (a tribe of Orang Asli). As early as 1860, Chinese settlers began excavating guano for fertilising their vegetable patches. However, they became famous only after the limestone hills were recorded by colonial authorities including Daly and Syers as well as American Naturalist, William Hornaday in 1878.
Batu Caves was promoted as a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, an Indian trader. He was inspired by the ‘vel’-shaped entrance of the main cave and was inspired to dedicate a temple to Lord Muruga within the caves. read more.....
Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's largest and best-known hill resort. Discovered by, and named after William Cameron, a government surveyor who, in 1885 explored the area by hacking a path up through dense jungle and came across, "A fine plateau shut in by mountains". At 1524m above sea level the area enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures no higher than 20°C and rarely falling below 10°C, a welcome change to the generally oppressive heat and humidity at sea level.
Nestling the borders of Pahang and Perak provinces are the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia's most popular hill station destination. It is actually an area of tremendous natural beauty, encompassing tea farms, vegetable fields, flower gardens and challenging hiking trails with rushing waterfalls. It also finds tremendous favor with many budget travelers because of its cool climate which is in stark contrast to the hot, humid weather in most parts of the region. read more.....
Strawberry, there’s nothing like spotting the Sweet Ripe Strawberries in Cameron Highlands. Strawberries come from a plant called ‘fragaria’. Strawberries available all year round in Cameron Highlands with a estimate of havasting it every 21 days.
The first garden strawberry was grown in France during the late 18th century. Prior to this, wild strawberries and cultivated selections from wild strawberry species were the common source of the fruit.
The strawberry fruit was mentioned in ancient Roman literature in reference to its medicinal use. The French began taking the strawberry from the forest to their gardens for harvest in the 1300s. Charles V, France's king from 1364 to 1380, had 1,200 strawberry plants in his royal garden. In the early 1400s western European monks were using the wild strawberry in their illuminated manuscripts. The entire strawberry plant was used to treat depressive illnesses. read more.....

Kellie's Castle, this amazing leftover from colonial times is set by a small river about 30 KM South West of Ipoh. The castle referred to is in fact an old unfinished mansion. It was to be one in the mould of great colonial houses, complete with Moorish-style windows & even a lift. A wealthy British Plantation Owner, William Kellie Smith, who lived in a splendid mansion in this area in the early 19th century, commissioned the building of the "Castle", which was to be the home of his (as yet unborn) son. The house was never occupied, as he died before the castle could be completed.
Kellie's Castle is located in Batu Gajah and was built by a Scottish planter, William Kellie Smith, who arrived in Malaya in 1890 and made his fortune in tin and rubber.
