Kuala Gandah - Elephant
Sanctuary

Elephants
Riding on River

trainer)
commands the elephant to drop the tourist

|
Tour highlights are
Elephant Sanctuary, Firefly, Fort Altingsburg,
Silver-Leaved Monkeys and much more... in this day
tour, one should not miss this
This centre was established in 1989
by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. A base for the
Elephant Relocation Team which started in 1974.
Being the only centre in Malaysia,
the team is dedicated to locating, subduing, translucent problem
elephants from areas where their habitats are constantly being
encroached by plantations, to Malaysia's National Parks such as
Taman Negara.
Over the past 25 years the strong
team has helped to prevent the further decline of the elephant
population by relocating more than 300 wild elephants!
Kuala Gandah also aims to promote
public awareness of the elephant's plight in Malaysia and to
support research into elephant translocation and conservation.
It also aims to educate the public about the importance of
habitat and environmental preservation.
Batu
Caves first discovered over
125 years ago, Batu Caves has
never ceased to attract visitors. Only 13km from Kuala
Lumpur's central business district and just outside
the city limits, these famous caverns are easily
accessible. Formed within the framework of an imposing
limestone outcrop about 400 million years ago, Batu
Caves actually consists of three main caves and
several smaller ones. The best known of these is
Temple or Cathedral Cave.
Temple
Cave has a ceiling looming over 100 meters overhead
and features ornate Hindu shrines. To reach it, one
has to climb 272 steps, a feat performed by many Hindu
worshippers on the way to the caves to offer prayers
to their revered deities.

Firefly

Light House at Melawati Hill

Silver Leaf Monkey
|
Fireflies are also called “Lightning
Bugs”. Named as they are nocturnal luminous of the beetle family
Lampyridae, consisting of about 1,900 species that
inhibit tropical and temperate regions. The common glowworm is a
member of this family. They shine in the night like fire to
attract sexual partner.
Someone figured that the firefly
hamlet as the eighth wonderful view. Why the fireflies only
occur in the particular rendezvous?
The growth of the firefly must
be mingled with the water of the runnels, woods and environment.
The river must meet in the intersection of the fresh and
salt-water. “Berembang” trees must be something that fancied
fireflies a lot, in addition to this factors, the environment
must be in its tranquility besides free from contamination.
Bukit
Melawati (Melawati Hill), Bukit
Melawati overlooks the little town and is an ideal sight looking
out at the Straits of Malacca. It was once used by the Sultan of
Selangor, followed by the Dutch and British. Fort Melawati, a
three-storey structure, on Melawati Hill was built on the 1780’s
during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim. As it is a strategic mouth
of the Selangor River, this place was once the scene where many
fiery battles take place between the locals and seafaring
invaders.
Fort
Altingsburg - Kota Melawati,
Sultan Ibrahmin - the Second Sultan
of Selangor built this Fort during his reign from 1770-1826.
Later it was taken by the Dutch for a short time and the name
was change to Fort Altingsburg, named after the Dutch Governer
of Malacca.
Several families of
Silver-Leafed Monkeys and Long-Tailed Macaques hang around here
for peanut handouts from visitors. The Silver-leafed babies have
golden fur as compared with the adults of dull-ashen grey. These
Monkeys are a delight - they are gentle and seem to always have
a thank you for every morsel of food given. The long-tailed
macaques, on the other hand, are generally a little more
mischievous and if you turn your back for a second - you'd never
know what they would do. Always be careful when feeding the
monkeys. Although they have had many interactions with humans,
we must remember that they are wild and wild animals tend to be
erratic sometimes.
