Batu Caves

Batu Caves, is a limestone hill, which has a series of caves and cave temples, located in Gombak district, 13 kilometres (8 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It takes its name from the Sungai Batu or Batu River, which flows past the hill. Batu Caves is also the name of the nearby village.

The Batu Caves is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is the focal point of Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia.

History
Interior of Batu Caves

The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years old. Some of the cave entrances were used as shelters by the indigenous Temuan / Besisi people (a tribe of Orang Asli). As early as 1860, Chinese settlers began excavating guano for fertilising their vegetable patches. However, they became famous only after the limestone hills were recorded by colonial authorities including Daly and Syers as well as American Naturalist, William Hornaday in 1878.

Batu Caves was promoted as a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, an Indian trader. He was inspired by the ‘vel’-shaped entrance of the main cave and was inspired to dedicate a temple to Lord Muruga within the caves. read more.....

Feeding the Elephants

Elephant Sanctuary was established in 1989 by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. A base for the Elephant Relocation Team which started in 1974.

Being the only centre in Malaysia, the team is dedicated to locating, subduing, translucent problem elephants from areas where their habitats are constantly being encroached by plantations, to Malaysia's National Parks such as Taman Negara.

Over the past 25 years the strong team has helped to prevent the further decline of the elephant population by relocating more than 300 wild elephants!

Elephant Riding is no longer be done at the Elephant Sanctuary Kuala Gandah

Kuala Gandah also aims to promote public awareness of the elephant's plight in Malaysia and to support research into elephant translocation and conservation. It also aims to educate the public about the importance of habitat and environmental preservation.

Altingsburg Lighthouse in Kuala Selangor

Bukit Melawati (Melawati Hill), Bukit Melawati overlooks the little town and is an ideal sight looking out at the Straits of Malacca. It was once used by the Sultan of Selangor, followed by the Dutch and British. Fort Melawati, a three-storey structure, on Melawati Hill was built on the 1780’s during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim. As it is a strategic mouth of the Selangor River, this place was once the scene where many fiery battles take place between the locals and seafaring invaders.

Fort Altingsburg - Kota Melawati, Sultan Ibrahmin - the Second Sultan of Selangor built this Fort during his reign from 1770-1826. Later it was taken by the Dutch for a short time and the name was change to Fort Altingsburg, named after the Dutch Governer of Malacca.

Feeding Silver Leaf Monkeys

Silver Leaf Monkeys are also known as silvered langurs. There are quite a number of leaf monkey specie in tropical zones around the world and Bukit Melawati (Melawati Hill) is home for this particular species scientifically known as Trachypithecus cristatus of sub-family Cercopithecidae.

In Malay language, the leaf monkeys in general are locally known as "lutung" or "lotong" (not to be mistaken with "lontong" which is a type of delicacy) although it is rather hard to hear such name reference anymore.

These leaf monkeys are docile and adorable creatures, and should not be mistaken with the fearless long-tailed macaques which often seen raiding opened dust bins and scampering kitchen for leftover food. Leaf monkeys, as the name would suggest, are arboreal or tree-dwelling. They feed on young leaves, tree shoots and wild fruits. read more.....

The common glow-worms is a member of this family. They shine in the night like fire to attract sexual partners.

Someone figured that the firefly hamlet as the eighth wonderful view. Why the fireflies only occur in the particular rendezvous?

The growth of the firefly must be mingled with the water of the runnels, woods and environment. The river must meet in the intersection of the fresh and salt-water. “Berembang” trees must be something that fancied fireflies a lot, in addition to this factors, the environment must be in its tranquillity besides free from contamination. read more.....
