Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands is a hill resort, otherwise known as Resorts World Genting, unfolded by the Genting Group. It is located on the Titiwangsa Ridge with an average elevation of 1470 metres (5710 feet) and with borders between Pahang and Selangor. Genting Malaysia Berhad is the company that not only operates the Awana chain of resorts and hotels but it also operates the whole of Genting Highlands. It is accessible by a one hour drive from Kuala Lumpur or, the Genting Skyway cable car that is 3.38 kilometres (2.10 miles).

The founder of Getting Highlands is Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong. While on a business trip in Cameron Highlands, he was enjoying the cool air on his hotel’s balcony when he had an epiphany, to build a hill resort near Kuala Lumpur. A private company, Genting Highlands Berhad, was formed on the 27th of April 965 with the late Tan Sri Haji Mohd Noah bin Omar. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong then gained approval to isolate 12 000 acres from Pahang and 2800 acres from Selangor. Upon bringing this suggestion to the Pahang Government, the request was immediately approved, however, the Selangor was not very keen on the idea and approved a 99-year lease. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong then met the Menteri Besar of Selangor, Dato Harun Idris and convinced him that a free hold lease will be more convenient then a 99-year old lease and he agreed.

The 4-year task to build an access road from Genting Sempah to Gunung Ulu Kali began on the 18 of August 1965. On the 31st of March 1969, the late YTM laid the foundation stone for the company’s pioneer hotel. He was impressed by the company because without the government help, they had successfully build a mountain resort and so, he granted Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong the only casino license.

Now, the hill resort is one of the most successful resorts with and indoor and outdoor theme park, casinos and hotels.
