Altingsburg Lighthouse

Bukit Melawati (Melawati Hill) - Dutch Fort

Bukit Melawati overlooks the little town and is an ideal sight looking out at the Straits of Malacca. It was once used by the Sultan of Selangor, followed by the Dutch and British. Fort Melawati, a three-storey structure, on Melawati Hill was built on the 1780’s during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim. As it is a strategic mouth of the Selangor River, this place was once the scene where many fiery battles take place between the locals and seafaring invaders.

Fort Altingsburg - Kota Melawati

Sultan Ibrahmin - the Second Sultan of Selangor built this Fort during his reign from 1770-1826. Later it was taken by the Dutch for a short time and the name was change to Fort Altingsburg, named after the Dutch Governor of Malacca.

Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world. Founded in 1929, the former Forest Research Institute became a fully-fledged statutory body, governed by the Malaysian Forestry Research and Development Board (MFRDB) under the Ministry of Primary Industries, in 1985.

Presently, both FRIM and MFRDB are under the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The Institute sits on a 545-ha site adjacent to the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve in the Kepong municipality, 16 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur. FRIM was awarded the MS ISO 9001:2000 certification in December 2007. It was gazetted as a ‘Natural Heritage Site’ on 10 February 2009 under the National Heritage Act 2005, and officially declared as a National Heritage on 10 May 2012. The Institute is helmed by Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod as its Director General since May 2008.

History of FIRM

The Regent of Selangor approved the establishment of a forest research institute (FRI) in an area that was stripped of its original forest cover for vegetable farming and mining activities at Kepong in 1925. A year later, Dr F.W. Foxworthy, the first forest research officer, started setting up a forest nursery and an experimental plantation on a large scale. Messrs. McCartney and Whitty made a plane-table survey of 1,500 acres of old mining land in Kepong in 1922 and suggested the areas as a possible site for a forest school and experimental plantations.

The Institute’s main office building, housing laboratories, the library, herbarium and museum in addition to staff quarters were occupied in 1929.  The sanction for the building was first given in 1927. The research activities carried out were chemistry, silviculture, botany, economy and zoology. conitunes reading on History of FRIM

Feeding Silver Leaf Monkeys

Silver Leaf Monkeys are also known as silvered langurs. There are quite a number of leaf monkey specie in tropical zones around the world and Bukit Melawati (Melawati Hill) is home for this particular species scientifically known as Trachypithecus cristatus of sub-family Cercopithecidae.

In Malay language, the leaf monkeys in general are locally known as "lutung" or "lotong" (not to be mistaken with "lontong" which is a type of delicacy) although it is rather hard to hear such name reference anymore.

These leaf monkeys are docile and adorable creatures, and should not be mistaken with the fearless long-tailed macaques which often seen raiding opened dust bins and scampering kitchen for leftover food. Leaf monkeys, as the name would suggest, are arboreal or tree-dwelling. They feed on young leaves, tree shoots and wild fruits. read more.....
