The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people". This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following principles:


This definition of eco-tourism, first adopted by the founding board of TIE's directors in 1991, states that:

The International Ecotourism Society

While this concise statement has become one of the most widely quoted and accepted definitions of ecotourism, MM Adventure recognizes that there are today dozens of other definitions, almost all of which incorporate the core meaning of the below definition of conserving the environment and sustaining the well-being of local people.
